Livingstone, Zambia is just across the boarder from Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. You can walk across the Zambezi bridge that stretches across the gorge of the Zambezi River that divides the two countries. This is also the famous bridge that everyone bungee jumps. I watched for a bit with the intention of taking the leap but totally chickened out!
After crossing the bridge and going through customs, you can grab a cab into town. There are lots of drivers waiting to take people, so it’s best to negotiate a fair to and from town (their first offer is usually double the price of what you should pay).
My driver dropped me off at the Mukuni Park Curio Market. There are many traditional arts and crafts ranging from jewelry to decorative home goods. Each of the stalls has pretty similar offerings and the vendors are not afraid to make the hard sell. Get your negotiating skills ready! Money and bartering are accepted forms of currency. I’m the proud owner of a pair of hippos for $5 and my tin of mints. My pen and shoes were also hot commodities, but decided best to keep these.
Unfortunately, aside from the market there’s not much to see in Livingstone and my day trip turned into a 3 hour trip. After walking through the markets, I grabbed some lunch at Olga’s. Felt a little strange eating mediocre Italian food on day two in Africa, but it was one of the very limited options and it had some good reviews from other travel bloggers. Not worth going out of your way to visit.
