Situated in the Lake District of Chile, this picturesque town is located on Lake Villarrica with great views of the perfect cone-shaped Villarrica Volcano. The whole area is surrounded by lakes, mountains, forests, rivers and waterfalls.
The highlight of Pucon is hiking Villarrica Volcano. There are many tour operators in town to book the trek to since you can’t hike without a guide. The trek costs $100 per person, which includes a guide and all of you’re equipment – backpack, snow pants, boots, crampons, etc.
We had an early start at 6:30am to drive to the base of the volcano. Unfortunately, the looming rain clouds threatened to damper our day. The guides took us to the base to see if the weather would improve. We arrived around 8am and the storm clouds, wind and rain looked even worse. Unfortunately, the hike was canceled but they provided everyone a full refund for the day. There was a terrible accident a few years back where a couple people died because a storm rolled. Better safe than sorry but disappointing nonetheless!
