El Calafate is located on the southern shore of Lake Argentino. The highlight of the area is the spectacular Perito Moreno Glacier. It’s massive spanning over 5 kilometers wide, 70 meters tall and cover over 250 square kilometers. Named after Argentine explorer Francisco Merino, the glacier is colored in a variety of hues from blue to grey to white.
There’s a long walk way that stretches in front of the glacier and there are many place to sit and take it all in. The glacier is moving about two metres per day, causing giant chunks of ice at the outermost edges crack under the tremendous pressure, rupture and crash into the water. It’s such a powerful spectacle! Another impressive aspect of this glacier is that it’s once of the few that is growing slightly (most in Patagonia are melting at an alarming rate).
